A painted letter in brilliant blue to Gwyneth Ho,

on friendship and the Hong Kong people’s fight for democracy.

Artist saar_voirvivre and Gwyneth Ho met in 2018 as classmates and roommates in the same scholarship master's program. They spent memorable times together at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) in the Netherlands. Subsequently, Gwyneth Ho returned to Hong Kong to participate in legislative council primaries and was charged under the Hong Kong national security law. During Ho's detention, the artist used paintings to narrate their deep friendship and paid tribute to those who have long pursued Hong Kong's democracy and freedom with immense courage and perseverance. Saar_voirvivre’s work is a painted letter to Gwyneth, reflecting their friendship in the context of the Hong Kong people’s fight for democracy. Blue is the primary colour of the painted work as it refers to Gwyneth Ho’s name (藍) and symbolises beauty, integrity and sensitivity. The “90 Days of You. Gwyneth Ho” exhibition features 90 artworks. The 90 pieces symbolise a standard detention period of 90 days, even though Gwyneth’s detention period has exceeded a thousand days. Unity, hardship, courage, love, and joy resonate throughout the exhibition. It is an ode to friendship and the resilience of Hong Kongers inside and outside of Hong Kong.
